In Espoo you can wash your rugs yourself at the city's rug washing places. They are open to everyone and free. Here are all seven places with addresses and facilities, so you can pick the nearest and best-equipped one.
- Espoo has 7 rug washing places. All are free.
- The places are open in weeks 18–39, roughly from early May to the end of September.
- Kauniainen has no washing place of its own. The nearest one is in Kilo, Espoo.
- A wet rug is heavy. Bring a helper and a car.
Rug washing places in Espoo
Every Espoo washing place has basins of different sizes, a rug wringer and drying racks. The differences are mostly about parking and somewhere to wait:
- Finnoonniitty is the best choice for a large rug: it has two rug wringers and its own car park.
- Kilo has swings, so kids have something to do while the rug dries. Parking is about 120 metres away.
- Kirkkojärvi has street parking.
- Olarinluoma was closed for renovation for the whole 2026 season. Check before next summer.
Kauniainen
Kauniainen has no rug washing place of its own. The nearest is in Kilo, Espoo, at Kuninkaistenportti 22, about three kilometres from the centre of Kauniainen. The Kirkkojärvi place in Espoo Centre is also close.
Rules at the washing place
- Wash only rugs. The place is not for washing cars.
- Wash the rug in a basin, not on the ground. The water comes from the mains and the wash water goes into the sewer.
- Use a mild detergent, such as pine soap.
- Clean up after yourself. Turn off the taps and put rubbish in the bins.
Tips for your washing day
- Pick a dry, breezy day. A rug dries best outdoors in dry weather.
- Vacuum the rug before washing. Loose dirt comes out more easily when the rug is dry.
- Bring a helper. A wet rug is heavy, and a large rug is easier to handle with two.
- Rinse until the water runs clear. Leftover detergent makes the rug stiff.
- Dry it properly. A damp backing starts to smell. A thick rug may need several days.

Which rugs should go to a cleaner?
Thin cotton and synthetic rugs are fine at a washing place. Wool rugs, hand-knotted rugs, silk and viscose rugs and thick shag rugs are better washed by a professional. Wool can felt, colours can bleed and a thick rug won't dry right through outdoors. Read more about wool rug cleaning and shag rug cleaning.
