Thick shag rugs drying on rails in the Mattonouto cleaning facility

A thick rug is hard to wash at home

A wet shag rug weighs several times more and won't fit in a home washing machine. Drying is the hardest part: the thick base stays damp indoors for days, and damp brings odour and a risk of mould.

  • A vacuum can't reach the dirt at the base of the pile
  • A wet rug is heavy to carry and hang
  • A rug that dries slowly starts to smell

The pile stands up again

Over time long pile gets flattened, and dust, grit and hair collect at its base. Washing loosens the dirt right down to the base, and the pile is soft and fluffy again. Drag the line across the photo to see the difference.

Why a shag rug is best cleaned in a facility

  • Washing loosens dirt, dust and hair right from the base of the pile
  • Spinning removes the water from the base, so the rug doesn't stay damp
  • The rug dries indoors under control, so the weather doesn't affect the result
  • Satisfaction guarantee: if you're not happy, we'll re-clean the rug at no extra cost

The process

How we clean a shag rug

  1. Rugs in the Mattonouto van1

    Pickup at your door

We collect the rug from your door at an agreed time in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa or Kauniainen.

  2. A stain on a shag rug being pre-treated before washing2

    Inspection and stains

We check the material and pile and pre-treat stains before washing.

  3. A rug being machine-washed in the cleaning facility3

    Washing

The rug is washed with a detergent that suits the material and rinsed until the detergent is gone.

  4. The rug wound inside the spin drum4

    Spinning

We spin the water out of the rug's base. This shortens drying and prevents odours.

  5. Washed rug wrapped in protective film, ready to be returned5

    Drying and return

The rug dries indoors right through to the base. Then we bring it back clean, 3–7 business days after pickup.

Care between washes

Good care keeps the pile soft and stretches the time between washes. A shag rug is best washed about once a year, more often in a home with pets.

  • Vacuum without a rotating brush, or use a rug nozzle. A rotating brush tears long pile.
  • Shake a small rug outdoors. Dirt comes out of the pile more easily than with a vacuum.
  • Turn the rug now and then so the pile flattens and fades evenly.
  • Blot a stain straight away with kitchen paper. Don't rub, or the pile will get matted.
